Gods and Generals: Extended Director's Cut --Troops Get Order

This scene is in the movie "God's and Generals", one of the best Civil War films I have seen. The setting is just before the ungodly battle of Fredericksburg, in late 1862. It was filmed in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia!

My orders:

Well, here is my new blog, for my time in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Some of you may be asking, "why is David going to West Virginia?"

Well, as some of you may know, I am very interested and captivated by the American Civil War,
and have been studying it since I was little. I have been a Civil War reenactor for nine years,
interacting with the North West Civil War Council (NCWC) and the Washington Civil War Association (WCWA). In my role as a reenactor, I portray a Union private from the 4th United States Infantry Regiment, company G.

My company has been in existance from the war of 1812 until this present day, where they still serve our
country honorably and bravely. In the years before the Civil War, the 4th was stationed in Oregon and Washington, for the dual purpose of keeping the territories in American hands, as well as keeping the Native Americans on their reservations and keeping the white settlers off of the reservations.

When the war rolled around, the 4th was called east to fight, and played a role in every major engagement in the eastern theatre, fighting in battles such as Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, The Wilderness, and Petersburg. The 4th had the great honor of being named General Grant's bodyguard for the last couple of months of the war, since Grant had once served with the 4th while it was in the western territories. The 4th was present at the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Ulysess S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia.

Any way, what am I doing in West Virginia?

My hopeful career is to work in the National Parks System, as a historical interpreter, with an edge in Civil War history. Doing some research, I found that Harpers Ferry NHP was looking for summer interns to work as historical interpreters for the summer, effectively doing Civil War reenacting for 12 weeks.

As of yesterday, I have now been hired to work at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park for this summer, from May 20th to August 12th. This is very exciting for me, as it gives me experience in the job I hope to have, but it also allows me to do what is my God-given passion, and get paid for it.

In Harpers Ferry, I will be living in an original 1800's home from the period, living in Civil War clothes almost 24/7, talking with the public about the Civil War and pre-Civil War history of the town, and giving guided tours. This will allow me to practically live the daily life of a Civil War soldier, which is something that I have been wanting to do for a very long time. It also gives me the chance to explore more of the east coast, which obviously I'm not very easily able to do.

So this is basically my dream job, and I am very excited to be able to do it.
It'll be wonderful to be out on the east coast doing what I love (and getting paid for it),
seeing a new part of the country, and all in all, just being able to 'get away from it all', as life
as a half way done college student have been a little less than a bed of roses.

I will be updating this blog as I can, hopefully posting pictures, and telling you about life in Harpers
Ferry. :)

Cheerio!
